What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a titanium screw that is drilled into the jawbone underneath the empty socket of a missing tooth. Over time, this screw becomes an integrated part of your dental anatomy, essentially replacing the missing tooth’s root. What Exactly is Smile On Four?

Most people have heard of All On 4, a procedure in which four titanium posts are inserted into the upper arch or lower arch as the main anchors and support system for a permanent denture. Smile On Four is our version of this procedure. 

Our All On Four Implants in Burbank, called Smile On Four, is a procedure that facilitates the replacement of a complete arch of missing teeth with as few as four implants. The areas where your dental implants can be placed will be strategically selected.

The healing teeth are indistinguishable from the final teeth: they look and feel completely natural. As such, this procedure allows you to replace all of your teeth in a day, as opposed to waiting for several weeks or months.

How Smile On Four (All On 4) Implants Work

During your consultation for your All On Four implants in Burbank, Dr. Pourshirazi will perform a thorough assessment of your teeth and jawbone. Based on your unique condition, he will determine the number of implants necessary and the appropriate angles of insertion.

If you have an insufficient jawbone, Dr. Pourshirazi may need to perform a sinus graft or bone grafting. These are standard procedures that facilitate jawbone regeneration and provide a more stable and solid base for the implants.

In some cases, the lower portion of the cheekbones might be used to ground the dental implants. This is also a standard procedure. 

During the actual implant surgery (done under anesthesia), Dr. Pourshirazi places 4, 6, 8, or more implants into strategic locations on your jawbone. Once the implants are placed, you’ll receive a complete set of “healing teeth” for a period of 4-6 months. During this time, your bone tissues will fuse with the implants via a process called “osseointegration”.

After the osseointegration process is complete, the healing teeth will be replaced with the finals. Dr. Pourshirazi will adjust the shape, size, fit, and color of the finals according to your specific requirements to ensure they look and feel completely natural. Recovery from Smile On Four (All On 4)

The majority of patients are can return to work in 2-3 days, but will need to adhere to a strict liquid and soft food diet during the healing period. Because your implants will be integrating, it’s very important to carefully follow the instructions we provide you with. Some helpful tips include:

  • Don’t rinse with water on the first day

If the CT scans show that you’re not a candidate, we can plan for sinus lift grafting, bone block grafting, and other kinds of bone grafting techniques to prepare your jawbone for the Smile On Four procedure. If the large grafts aren’t an option or if we don’t want to wait for the recovery time that large bone grafting takes, then the CT scan can evaluate the zygoma bone to determine if you’re a candidate for zygoma implants, which are also an option.
